Canada’s cuts to the Global Fund will fuel reversal of progress on HIV, TB, and Malaria

This week’s replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria offered the first test of whether Canada is still willing to stand up for humanity since the government passed a federal budget that singles out global health for cuts as it slashes billions of dollars in international assistance.

MSF is deeply disappointed to see Canada’s cuts to aid reflected in its reduced pledge to the Global Fund. Canada’s previous contributions to the Global Fund, including a sizeable increase for the previous replenishment in 2022, had been world leading. Now, Canada has chosen not to lead, but to follow in the footsteps of other countries whose cuts to global health this year have already had deadly consequences. Such cuts will fuel the reversal of progress in the fight against HIV, TB and malaria.
