Doctors Without Borders Matching Gift Campaign FAQ: Donation Match Questions Answered

How does the matching gift campaign work?

Thanks to a group of generous donors, every dollar you give will be matched until the campaign ends or the maximum matching amount is reached. Any gifts received after that time, while no longer matched, will still generously support MSF’s critical medical work.

Will my donation really be matched?

Yes, every dollar you give will be matched with the same amount through campaigns that clearly indicate a match. Once the match cap is reached, additional gifts will not be matched but will still be used where needed most.

Where does my donation go?

Unless specified, all gifts are unrestricted, meaning they go where people’s medical needs are greatest across MSF’s programs. This includes the contexts featured in this campaign (Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan and Ukraine) as well as other crises MSF responds to year-round.

How is my donation used?

MSF teams provide emergency medical care to people affected by wars, conflicts, disease outbreaks, disasters and lack of access to healthcare in more than 70 countries around the world. Your donations pay for millions of consultations, surgeries, treatments and vaccinations every year. It helps us deliver medical supplies and support other essential humanitarian activities, including supplying clean drinking water and setting up sanitation facilities. It also means we can respond immediately when a new crisis emerges, rather than waiting for an emergency fundraising campaign to generate funds. This also keeps our medical activities running during challenging circumstances to reach people who might otherwise be left without essential care.

How much of my donation supports Doctors Without Borders’ humanitarian programs?

At all times, MSF directs a minimum of 80 cents from every dollar towards our operations, which provide medical assistance to people facing crises around the world, and on advocacy and awareness-raising activities in Canada and elsewhere.

Why donate to MSF?

Every day, more than 65,000 MSF staff work in more than 70 countries around the world to provide free, quality healthcare to people who need it most. The support of our donors makes this vital humanitarian work possible for people affected by conflicts, disasters, disease outbreaks and lack of access to healthcare.

How is MSF different from other charities?

For more than 50 years, MSF has remained dedicated to the humanitarian principles of independence, neutrality and impartiality. We provide care based solely on people’s medical needs, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

More than 97 per cent of our funds comes from private support from individuals, foundations and corporations. We do not rely on governments for donations. This enables us to act quickly during emergencies and go where people’s needs are greatest. Our financial independence also means we can speak out and raise our voice against the brutality we witness in the many places where we work.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, donations made to MSF Canada are tax-deductible.

Will I receive a tax receipt?

MSF Canada can issue a receipt for most donations of $10 or more. Please note that the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) has rules regulating when a person or company may receive a receipt for a donation. As a registered Canadian charity, MSF must strictly comply with these rules.
